Joint, Marginal, and Conditional
Given random variables .
Joint Probability
Probability of two or more events happening at the same time.
Marginal Probability
Probability of a single event occurring, without considering any other events.
i.e. the integration over the random variable(s) such that the joint distribution collapses into just the marginal distribution of .
Conditional Probability
Probability of an event occurring given that another event has already occurred.
Note
If and are independent, then the marginal and the conditional are equal.
